Article Overview
ToggleAMPThe name Mortal Kombat 1 is a misnomer, especially for those new to the gory fighting game series, which released the 12th entry of the franchise by that name. Then why is the name Mortal Kombat 1? The reason is that the game’s mainstay, Liu Kang, who has become a demigod, preferred to rest the timeline of the last few games. Giving a chance to reset the timeline was also an opportunity to overhaul the MK universe. The standard edition of MK1, which offers only the game playable on Xbox series X/S, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC, has been available since September 19 for $69.99 across various online outlets like Amazon, Walmart, GameStop, Target, etc. However, to get some extras along with the game, you must buy the Mortal Kombat 1 collector’s edition, released on September 14 for $249.99.
By looking at the vast difference in price between the standard edition and collector’s edition of KM1. It costs more than three times, it is normal to expect a lot from the package. However, the edition is only for Mortal Kombat Xbox and PS5 users, not casual gamers. Only serious gamers who get a kick from playing gory and violent games should not mind shelling out extra dollars to earn 2700 Dragon Krystals (in-game currency) besides gaining early access to DLC characters. In addition, the Kombat Pack consists of 6 new playable characters, a Jean Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage, and 5 new Kameo characters. Besides these, the package includes an exclusive steel case, a Liu Kang sculpture, limited edition COARSE art prints, and an exclusive Liu Kang in-game color variant (limited edition).
Resetting the timelines is a nice trick to renew the interest of MK fans in the classic characters they are already familiar with. Seeing the already-known characters in new relationships or roles helps the fans get a kick and makes the game more appealing. Besides Liu Kang, Mortal Kombat 1 characters include various fighters like Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Kitana, Johnny Cage, Kenshi Takahashi, Kung Lao, Mileena, Raiden, Rain, Smoke, Li Mei, Baraka, Tanya, Geras, Reptile, Havik, Ashrah, Sindel, General Shao, Nitara, Shang Tsung, and Reiko. Choose your fighters from the list of popular characters in their new variants, and then watch them kick, stab, and punch each other for hours together.
After wrapping up the campaign and reaching the last chapter, you can explore the other features of MK1, such as multiplayer matches, towers of fighters to defeat, and, of course, the Invasion mode, which is the star attraction.
Taking a cue from the main story’s timeline, the Invasion mode is a board-like RPG comprising the famous MK fighters and their current avatars. Having previously enjoyed the immense fighting and violence, players must prepare to deal with the immensely complex mode, including side objectives, loot, elemental combat, tons of Easter eggs, character upgrades, and crafting.
The basic feature of the Invasion mode allows you to pick up a character and a Kameo fighter. It is a new feature in MK1 that enables you to strengthen your fighting abilities with support from another character while exploring various simple maps split into nodes. You must unlock different paths on the map and complete events to progress in the game. Some events include standard fights against other characters, while others have you mashing buttons to break items and dodging fireballs.
The complexity grows as the game progresses, and you will have to manage skill points for multiple characters by consulting an in-game chart. It needs a lot of mental application and might not be as funny and exciting as engaging in exciting fights.
Despite the fun of enjoying the new features of Invasion, Kameos, the hardest-hitting fights, and gory combats that set the adrenalin gushing, are still the greatest attraction of the Mortal Kombat series that stands out from other fighting games. Mortal Kombat 1 collector’s edition assures a lot of enjoyment to players who just can’t stay away from its incredible attraction of extreme violence and blood splashing.
